Summertime

"Summertime and the livin' is easy"

"Summertime and the livin' is easy" ??!!!-- I'm guessing Mr. Gershwin didn't have to wear a tie to work because there's nothing easy about putting a noose around your neck as you head out into sweltering heat.   Anyway, it is summer which means that Saratoga season is not far off -- and who doesn't live for the track?   We are excited about a number of things going on with our horses this summer, but before I get to the update, take a look at recent pictures (Thirtycandan pictures were taken this morning) and you'll see why there's cause for hope, anticipation, excitement, etc. .....  enjoy the pictures:

Enough of the pictures, now on to the horses:

Strikealinethruit - The mare ran very well in her second race of the year to finish 2nd in a competitive field of NY Bred allowance fillies.  She came out of the race well and we are looking to run her back on July 4th -- we hope to generate our own kind of fireworks with a well-deserved win in that event.

Irishtocat - As the photos above attest (and yes, I am biased and included probably too many of her, but so what?), Irishtocat looks great and ran pretty well too despite an 8th place finish in her first start of 2012.   The filly was stopped abruptly shortly after the start when a wayward horse got in her path -- Irishtocat collected herself after losing what I gather is about 5 lengths and then went on to run strongly down the stretch to finish  less than 4 lengths behind the winner.  She gained a lot of fitness out of the race and we're hoping she shows more in her next start -- we're aiming toward a race on July 8 for her next start.

Blissful Belle - The filly has been given time off for her foot to heal and should be back in training in a few weeks.

Thirtycandan - The gelding arrived at Michelle Nihei's barn this weekend and is adjusting to race track life.  He is lean and has some conditioning but he has a ways to go before he will be ready for his first race.  While we had hoped he could start at Saratoga, the amount of conditioning and training he needs to be race ready is greater than we had anticipated.   More on him as he spends time at the track -- we already know they think he will pick up the routine quickly, but the conditioning and muscle will take some time.   He looks good as you can see from the pictures above, but isn't quite race track ready.

Ishkabibble - Opposed to the conditioning of Thirtycandan, not enough good can be said about the preparation of this filly for the track.  She came in looking great and ready to handle all the activities and routine of the track.  She galloped a strong 2 miles today and will aim for her first easy 3 furlong breeze on the Oklahoma track next week if all continues to progress well.    We're still on track for a start at Saratoga if she continues to progress.   She's proof that a horse's off-season preparation is equally important as the on-track training is -- so thanks again to Steve for all his work with her.

Dixie Bluebell - The little hussy is done with the studs in Kentucky and will be headed back to Saratoga this weekend.   I hear they have all they can do to get her not to smoke any more cigarettes on the way back.  She visited Thunder Gulch so many times, she picked up a bad habit after the deed was done -- we'll have to get her to use carrots as a substitute for the postcoital smoke!

Spring to the Sky -- I can't end without mentioning how impressed I was with our friend Tony's 3 year old Langfuhr colt in the stakes race last week.  First time turf, first time stakes company and the horse took the lead and held on to it to the final 1/16th only to lose by a few lengths to seasoned stakes horses.   Much improvement can be expected next out and Tony has himself a legitimate stakes horse -- congratulations Tony!!

Welcome new partners Chris and Corey who have joined in on Ishkabibble -- we're hoping that the little filly does well for all who have gotten in to racing for the first time.   Best of luck to us all with Ishkabibble!

Enjoy the heat -- it's only here for a short time!
